Dans une ferme où les animaux sont, à l’insu des propriétaires, doués de la parole, la vache Otis brille par son insouciance. Toujours prête à chanter, danser ou jouer des tours pendables, elle exaspère son père, le taureau Ben, respecté patriarche des lieux, ainsi que Miles, une mule d'une grande sagesse. De fait, les indiscrétions et les étourderies d'Otis menacent de révéler le secret de leur comportement humain au fermier et ses proches. Mais lorsque de dangereux prédateurs menacent les occupants de la ferme, la vache fêtarde trouve en elle un courage insoupçonné et des talents de rassembleuse pour organiser la résistance.

BARNYARD

(PG) Humanity’s insistence on the anthropomorphization of every creature on God’s green Earth reaches its eerie apex in Barnyard. Down on the farm, cows walk on two legs, udders protruding like potbellies, as they party like its Spring Break ’06. Otis (Kevin James), a carefree young Holstein, refuses to settle down until his pops Ben (Sam Elliott), gets “Mufasad” by a pack of coyotes. With the safety of all the farm’s animals resting on Otis’ mottled shoulders, will he accept his fate or run and party? Pretty creepy to behold (like the wives of Stepford) and a bit more serious than the preview lets on (you can’t get much graver than Peter Gabriel playing over a father’s funeral), Barnyard is the slightest animated kiddie flick of the season. This cartoon is one square dance, held solely for the little ones (the hip soundtrack - overseen by Pulp Fiction’s music supervisor Karyn Rachtman - is the only draw for parents), and even then, it’s awfully, if bloodlessly, violent. The poor voicework (Courteney Cox is the worst) alleviates nothing. If Orwell’s Animal Farm were taken over by unsupervised teens, it would probably look a lot like Barnyard. (Beechwood, Carmike)
